The Trainspotting soundtrack is actually two soundtrack albums. After the movie of the same name was released in 1996 and became a cult classic, British record company EMI released the first Trainspotting soundtrack on July 9. 1996. A little more than a year later they decided to release a second version on October 21, 1997 which contained new material not included on the first soundtrack. The additional songs included more songs from the film which weren’t originally included on the initial soundtrack in addition to songs which were not in the final film but served either as inspiration for the film’s direction or were in early iterations of the film which were subsequently changed.
The All Music Guide ranks the first Trainspotting soundtrack a noteworthy 4.5 out of 5 stars and Trainspotting #2 received a respectable 4 out of 5 stars. Further attesting to the quality of the Trainspotting soundtrack, the editors of Vanity Fair Magazine ranked the original release as the 7th best motion picture soundtrack in history in an October 2007 article. This achievement places the Trainspotting soundtrack among other legends such as the soundtracks from “A Hard Day’s Night”, “Pulp Fiction”, “The Graduate”, “Saturday Night Fever”, and “American Graffiti”, to name several from the list.
